Active Particulate Filter - Technical Progress that Widens the Market for Emission Controls

2004-10-25

Sweden based STT Emtec takes another step forward in emission control for heavy and medium-duty diesel engines. The company has developed an active system for diesel particulate filters, which solves the problem with soot particulates by burning them. The system is based on catalytic combustion of diesel fuel injected into the exhaust gases.

 - We build our system using proven mechanical components controlled by an advanced control module designed in-house. Necessary heat is generated over the catalyst in the reaction between oxygen and fuel. One of the main features of the system is flameless regeneration, when soot oxidizes in the filter, says project leader Claes Åkerlund of STT Emtec.

This new active system has been tested in cooperation with the bus operator Connex. A field trial in Sweden has shown good results.

- Being one of the leading bus operators in Europe, we are interested to be in the forefront of the development of new technology, especially when it comes to environmental tasks. We have been following the developments closely in the field trial, and the results exceeded our expectations, says Martin Atterhall, Technical Director at Connex Sweden AB.

For several years STT Emtec has been successful with its DNOx emission control system that reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). The company has delivered systems to customers in Europe, Asia, as well as North America, where the North America is the single most important market.

Existing diesel particulate filters have relatively low soot oxidation rates, which has prevented them from being used in many applications. STT Emtec’s new system extends the potential field of use.

The potential market for STT Emtec’s active regeneration system is huge. The market window is now open to more engine and vehicle types than ever before, as it is possible to retrofit vehicles already equipped with passive particulate filters.
